CCHS Student to Explore Computer Science at National Workshop

Crowsnest Consolidated High School (CCHS) Grade 9 student Sonya Neumeier is heading across the country to explore Computer Science at the University of Waterloo. Seeing Possibilities and Rewards in Computer Science (SPARCS) brings together students from across Canada who have little to no exposure to computer science.
"I heard about SPARCS from my math teacher," says Neumeier. "She gave me a poster explaining what it is and it sounded like something I would be interested in so I applied! I really enjoy math and I really wanted to be able to do something that I accomplished on my own."
The immersive week-long workshop in May hosts students in campus dorms and includes lectures and hands-on learning opportunities. All participants are in grade 9 or 10 and should have an interest in mathematics. Participants interact with university faculty, undergraduate students, and other expert educators to gain a more comprehensive understanding of computer science.
CCHS Principal Paul Pichurski celebrates Neumeier's achievement. "Our school is proud of Sonya's acceptance to the SPARCS program," says Pichurski. "She is a dedicated student and we are excited for her to have this opportunity to pursue her interests through this unique program."
Neumeier wants to attend university after high school graduation, and is exploring her interests and options. SPARCS will help her discover potential opportunities in computer science. "I am really excited to meet new people with the same interests as me and form new friendships with people from all over Canada," she says. "And I'm very excited to see Annie at the Stratford Theatre."
We wish Sonya Neumeier all the best on her SPARCS adventure next month!
